Jamie first contacted me in September 2017, but I was aware of her long before that, having seen a bevy of photos she created with Halifax photographers. I told her I’d be back in Halifax in October 2018… and here we are. Jamie, adorably, was a bit shocked that I remembered her after a year, and she jumped at the chance to work with me.
Anyone who follows me on social media knows how much I love gingers/redheads, so I always jump at the chance to work with them, especially models I haven’t worked with before. Jamie, 21, is one of those rare gingers who has very few freckles — her skin is nearly translucent, which makes her look more doll-like. So why not add some of those missing freckles with light? Using a set of cheap IKEA curtains I hung in the window, the mid-day sun blasted through them to create an interesting pattern on Jamie’s face.
You might be wondering if all of that super, super long red hair is real. It is! Jamie grew it herself! And it’s heavy as hell. I don’t know how she carries it around all the time.
Jamie is bubbly and enthusiastic and loves to talk, and we had a grand time getting to know each other while making pictures. She later described the experience to me as one of her top modelling experiences when meeting someone for the first time. I take that as high praise. It probably helps that I started playing Nirvana the second she walked in the door, which is one of her favourite bands along with Pink Floyd.
The other thing I love about Jamie besides her red hair is her willingness to do anything for a photo, no matter how crazy it is. She’s a free spirit and an open book and she loves being in front of the camera. This was Jamie’s first time modelling in over a year, and I’m overjoyed that she came back to it just for a chance to work with me. I sincerely hope she gets back at it with the talented photographers in her hometown.
