Did you know I used to shoot a ton of celebrity red carpet events? It’s true. Everyone from Alanis Morissette to Matt Damon to Jessica Simpson to Katy Perry have been in front of my lens at various events in Toronto over the last decade. Sometimes, it’s just a fleeting moment, like seeing Alanis on the red carpet at the Canada Walk Of Fame ceremony. Other times it’s a live performance, like seeing Katy Perry sing “I Kissed A Girl” at Fashion Cares. And occasionally there are rare moments where I’ve been able to spend significant one-on-one time with a celebrity, such as with Matt Damon at the ONEXONE charity event at Maple Leaf Gardens.
So for Throwback Thursday this week, let’s go back 11 years to the 2005 Much Music Video Awards. It featured performances from The Killers, Arcade Fire, and the Black Eyed Peas among others. k.os was the night’s big winner, with four awards (though Billy Talent was nominated for nine). I got to hang out backstage for all of it and photograph celebrities like the aforementioned as well as Carmen Electra, Backstreet Boys, Vivica A. Fox, and tons of others. Here’s a sampling of photos from that night.
