SAVANNA X VTOGRAPHY

Savanna

Meeting people to photograph has never been a problem for me. Living in a big city helps. Whether it’s on Instagram, through mutual friends, or at a nightclub, I’ve always had a plethora of good looking people to shoot. My latest discovery is using Tinder to find photo subjects, which is where I found Savanna.

I’ve never used Tinder for dating, for all the obvious reasons — it’s as shallow as it gets, quite frankly. But it’s always been vastly entertaining to me, to see how people present themselves to the world. One nice thing about Tinder is that users can link their Instagram profiles. When I came across Savanna on Tinder, I discovered her Instagram, and from there her Snapchat and her Twitter, and asked her if she wanted to get together to make some pictures.

We made these photos in my downtown Toronto condo. I armed myself with my trusty Nikon D750 FX DSLR Camera (Amazon affiliate link), along with my two favourite prime lenses: the Nikon 50mm ƒ/1.4G FX lens (Amazon affiliate link) and the Nikon 85mm ƒ/1.8G FX lens (Amazon affiliate link). Lighting was purely from my north-facing window, plus whatever reflections came off my white walls. Aside from some red accents in my condo (not visible), the colour palette is mostly neutral, which helps keep any weird colour casts at bay.

One of the easiest ways to add a little visual interest to a photo are strings of LED lights (Amazon affiliate link), as seen in the background of the photo below. There are lots of different options available, including multi-coloured LEDs, waterproof outdoor models, and even copper strings that can be wrapped around virtually any object. When using lenses with large apertures like the Nikon 50mm ƒ/1.4 or Nikon 85mm ƒ/1.8, the lights can really be transformed into little glowing balls of bokeh.

At just 19, this was Savanna’s first photo shoot, but I’m sure the first of many to come. Unbeknownst to me before we shot together, Savanna has spent most of 2017 working hard at the gym to get into great shape. I admire her dedication! Want to see more of Savanna?
